Sometimes a cake is created to celebrate a wedding but sometimes it is created simply to explore an idea, push creative boundaries and see just how far cake design can go.
My Love & Nature design was one of those cakes…
Created for the Wedding Cake Competition at Cake International 2025, this intricate piece was inspired by Pre-Raphaelite art, the natural world and the idea of love flowing through the cake.
The inspiration behind Love & Nature
The starting point for Love & Nature was the relationship between two ideas: love and the natural world.
Inspired by the romantic, dreamlike quality of Pre-Raphaelite art, the design brought together figures, flowers and intricate decorative details to create a cake that felt almost like a piece of artwork.
Rather than treating each tier as a separate element, the intention was to create a sense of movement throughout the design — with love flowing through the cake and connecting the different elements together.
The result was a wedding cake design that was romantic, highly detailed and deliberately different from a traditional wedding cake.
A wedding cake created as edible art
For a competition piece like this, every detail matters.
The cake incorporated hand-crafted elements, intricate sugar work and carefully considered decorative details, all designed to work together as one cohesive piece.
From the figures and floral elements to the smaller details that reward a closer look, the design was an opportunity to explore the kind of craftsmanship that sits behind bespoke luxury cake design.
It also reflects something that is at the heart of SJ Cake Design: the belief that a wedding cake can be much more than something beautiful to look at.
A Bronze Award at Cake International 2025
Love & Nature was entered into Cake International 2025, one of the major events in the cake decorating and sugarcraft calendar.
The Birmingham event brings together cake artists and sugarcraft professionals from around the world, with competition categories covering everything from wedding cakes and hand-painted cakes to sugar flowers and decorative exhibits.
Against that backdrop, receiving a Bronze Award for Love & Nature was a wonderful achievement and recognition of the time, creativity and craftsmanship that went into the piece.
For a cake designer, competitions like Cake International are also an opportunity to step outside the everyday brief of a client’s wedding cake and explore new techniques, ideas and styles.
The detail is in the design
One of the things we love most about looking back at Love & Nature is seeing the individual details that make up the finished piece.
From a distance, the overall design tells the story. Up close, the smaller details reveal the hours of work behind it.
That combination of design, sugarcraft and storytelling is what makes competition work so rewarding — and why elements developed through pieces like this can also inspire future wedding cake designs.

Looking back – and looking forward
Although Love & Nature was created for Cake International rather than a real wedding, the ideas behind it are still relevant to the way we approach bespoke wedding cake design.
Every couple has their own story, their own style and their own things that matter to them.
That might translate into delicate sugar flowers, hand-painted details or something much more unexpected. The important thing is that the finished cake feels personal.
Love & Nature was a chance to explore that idea through a completely different lens — creating a wedding cake as a celebration of love, nature, art and craftsmanship.
